Invented by Dr. Samuel C. Hurst in 1971, screen monitors have become very popular mostly in commercial computing like ATMs, malls, ticket machines, mobile phones and medical field.

Touch screens are being utilized everywhere and they also serve as a major asset in industrial applications too. This is because industrial touch screens are more advantageous over the usual computer screens.

Touch screens unite both the functions of input and output devices. This minimizes the necessity for separate attachments like mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Users just have to touch the screen with a finger and operate it accordingly.

However, before looking at the advantages, let us understand the different kinds of industrial touch screens available.

Touch screens use various types of technological systems which help to identify the touch of a person and the most common ones are capacitive, resistive, infra red and acoustic.

Resistive touch screen


These are the most versatile type and consist of a glass plate covered with resistive and conductive metallic layers. An electric current passes through them when the monitor is operating. When the person touches the monitor, the layers come in contact on that exact point and cause interference in the electric field. The machine then starts computing.

Capacitive touch screens

This contains a layer, which acts as storage for electrical charge found on the glass sheet of the screen. When a person touches the monitor screen, the electric charge is measured by the electric circuit and then the computation is done by the machine.

The screen of capacitive systems also allows more light transmission than resistive types. They are the more popular types of industrial touch screens for outdoor and industrial applications due to their durability, dirt and moisture resistive powers.

Acoustic

This uses ultrasonic waves, which pass through the glass plate of the touch screen. When the screen is touched, a part of wave is absorbed through which the location of touch is identified

These types of touch screens provide high clarity, but they can be easily spoiled and the moisture and dirt can also affect the operations.

Infrared

These are of two types, one which requires the warmth from a user’s touch on the surface layer and the second uses a light beam on the monitor’s surface which is used by infra red for measuring and computing.

1. There is no demand for separate wires, peripherals like mouse, keyboard or monitor thus reducing the size of the computer system.

2. They are tougher than a conventional LCD monitor with regard to durability and many are even resistant to industrial pollutants like oil, dirt, water, grease, chemicals and toxins.

3. Many are designed to be protected against electrical surges, temperature extremes, physical impact, theft and tampering.

4. The high-efficiency units provide a long-lasting productivity in spite of any harsh working environments. The unit is updated consistently to keep up the industry standards at any time.

5. They are extremely helpful in medical field for easy access to data entry and retrieving data. Medical records can be viewed along with MRI results.

6. The industrial touch screens provide easy transit into the existing IT infrastructure through product data acquisition, process visualization, keywords, brackets, and other customized alternatives.
