It is important that you go to Lapland prepared because the temperatures can drop as low as -30 or more in the winter months. As long as you wear the appropriate clothing, believe it or not, you will be comfortable. It is a must that you buy the proper clothes from the outset and don’t try to get cheaper alternatives, especially for the children. Waterproof trousers that are designed for sub zero temperatures are a must and a really good ski jacket. Many people believe they also need thermals underneath their ski clothes but it really isn’t necessary, wearing layers of your normal winter clothes allows the air to trap between them creating more than enough warmth.
Gloves and hat are also essentials and there is nothing worse than cold hands, likewise a good pair of snow boots is also vital. Ski socks should be worn and can be worn alongside your everyday socks and for this reason you only need to take a couple of ski socks for a week’s holiday.
Small children are probably best with the salopettes which are waterproof, warm trousers with the braces attached; this allows for them to be comfortable and also keeps them completely dry. Many of the activities in Lapland, especially the snowmobiles will insist you wear their waterproofs and ski gear to ensure you are nice and warm.

The weather in Lapland is very, very cold and simply walking to and from the supermarkets and restaurants will leave you very cold but if you have the correct clothes, you will be more than comfortable. Restaurants and bars are used to people arriving in their ski gear and many people leave on their ski trousers and simply take off their coat in restaurants and you will see lots of locals doing the same.
When buying ski wear, especially for the children, always try to buy a size bigger in both the coats and salopettes, this way they will fit for longer and the winter coat can be worn back home. Boots also may need to be a little bigger to allow for the ski socks and again try and buy the children something that they can wear at home so it isn’t a waste of money.
Lapland is a wonderful experience and you will be spending lots of time outside and involved in activities, you will want to make sure you are as warm as you can be to ensure you have the best time ever. There are many shops in Lapland that sell and supply ski and snow wear but many of them are very expensive and it is always better to purchase before you go if you can.
