There are many different tile materials to choose from when it comes to kitchen floors and it really depends on your personal preferences and existing decor as to which ones you choose. Any existing decor needs to be taken into consideration and if the floor is the last place to decorate, always ensure that you blend in and compliment any floor tile colours.

In general darker colours will absorb the light and make the room appear smaller but this doesn’t mean that dark colours are out of bounds. Having light colours and shades on the walls will open up small spaces and darker shades on the floor will not enclose the room too much.

If busy patterns are used on the walls, it is always better to keep the floors neutral and plain in order to make focal points of the busy areas.

Ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles are still a firm favourites and are strong, durable and versatile as a flooring material. Ceramic tiles can also be arranged in different floor patterns such as the diamond shape and multi sized tiles can be used to add extra individual design.

Many natural stone tiles are ideal for kitchen floors and slate, quarry tiles, granite, travertine and flagstone are all good choices as floor tiles. The natural shades that occur with some natural stone tiles will add both character and style to any kitchen decor.
Marble is also used as a floor tile material and can have spectacular style and presence but it has to be said that marble is the more expensive tile and the maintenance is higher than other tile materials. Marble tiles can be used in other ways however and can be used in the form of mosaic tiles around floor borders and on kitchen countertops. Marble tiles work well in small areas for the kitchen on kitchen islands and around countertop borders with spectacular finishes.
Slate tiles
which come under the natural stone variety are very durable tiles that make great additions to kitchen floors. The subtle and natural tones make great additions to country style kitchens and they are great in busy areas such as the kitchen.

Always take the time to shop around and look at the choices available for floor tiles as there are more than you will initially realise and if you are looking for something a little different, there is almost certainly a tile that will suit your personal preferences and design style.
