Lapland’s summer lasts for only about two months but they are two months of long warm days and nights where the sun does not drop from the sky and Lapland experiences 24 hour light. The locals take this opportunity to get out and about and explore more of the countryside than they are able in the winter months.

The locals in Lapland rely on tourism and are very busy in the winter period but the temperatures are also extremely cold making it almost impossible to go too far out into the forests for too long. Many locals and holidaymakers explore by cross country skiing but in the summer months, long lazy walks can be taken and the nature and the wildlife explored.

The brown bears are well out of hibernation come the summer and the tree’s have the scratches to prove it. The brown bears live right i the heart of the forest and will very rarely be seen in the towns.
Summer see’s the breeding time for the fox’s and they can be seen often carrying food for their young. The red squirrels are also out in force and can be seen foraging about and generally enjoying the summer sun.

Other animals that can be seen are a wide variety of birds including swans that migrate every year to the same spot and the impressive Owl that can be seen high up in the trees.

High up on the hillsides wild berries and mushrooms begin to grow and come the end of the summer, they are ready to be picked and enjoyed. Many locals will forage around in the summer months picking the wild berries and camping up on the hills where the sun sets a spectacular sight.

Lapland is not often thought about when we think about summer holidays simply because it is known only as a winter destination but in fact Lapland is simply beautiful in the summer months and the temperatures are very pleasant indeed.

There are many activity centres that offer summer activities such as bike riding, canoeing, white water rafting and bear watching and Lapland is a haven for walkers who enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. For the children there is plenty to do including bike riding, open countryside and lots of things and places to explore. Lapland offers those who enjoy peace and quiet the ideal opportunity to discover the beauty of Lapland
